Is Acrylic clearer than glass? -Making your products and livestock look great and stay healthy

We create product displays, podiums, jewelry cases, and more… -All the way across the board to custom acrylic aquariums that we have created to be placed in professional establishments. As we explore the choice between glass and acrylic, we can’t help but wonder how acrylic materials are so much more clear than glass.

A study of the light that passes through materials has shown that while conventional glass will typically filter out much light including some in the visible spectrum, acrylic resin (Plexiglas) does not. It leaves light untouched for the most part.

Why is this important? If I was using a display case for living plants, or creating a top for a reef aquarium, I would need to be certain that the deep parts of the ultraviolet spectrum are passing through to my plants and animals. Glass may diminish the health of my live stock, and in the case of corals, leave them drab and gloomy.

Scientists have discovered that while glass will usually start to take much of the visible and invisible light spectrum out, Acrylic / Plexi will not. Acrylic material has the same refraction pattern as water. Glass is all over the place and is simply expensive to engineer it for the spectral output one desires. Please see the chart below to compare Acrylic, Glass, and the light measured on an average (good weather) day. Clearly, we can see how the glass starts to filter out the upper visible spectrum and in other charts can be seen to be unreliable in other parts of the EM spectrum.

Note: We’ve created this sample graph from data pulled from the internet on many sites. It is approximate. Glass can be made to have many different spectral readings, but it seems to always loose out somewhere. This is simply to illustrate how wonderfully CLEAR Acrylic is. Many reef keeping web sites have deep data to support this as the marine community relies heavily on acrylic for this reason.

“I sell jewelry, why should I care?” Light is the most important piece of the puzzle when a vendor has product on display. This is why so many stores invest in special lighting for their cases, and their displays. So with such an investment, would you want to diminish the effect by as much as %15? I think not. This is precisely why using a truly “Clear” substance like acrylic materials is important. Microphone mounting on Acrylic / Plexiglas podiums

One of the most important aspects of using a podium in a medium to large space is working with a microphone. In fact, that’s one of the podiums most important functions for a speaker using notes. Holding a mic in the perfect place for the speaker to be heard.

Often, a lapel mic is not practical if many speakers are to share the podium, or we want to be able to host an impromptu guest speaker. This means we need a standard microphone that needs to be mounted or held by a stand of some sort.

Now the only “clear” or see-through microphone is the one that doesn’t exist, but we have the next best thing. We find that mounting a mic stand directly on the podium itself is the cleanest and most effective way to do this. It allows a cordless mic to become virtually invisible as there is no unsightly mic stand in front of the speaker. Only a b eautiful acrylic podium.

Acrylic material can be a handy surface

As we use acrylics in our custom creations for store displays, aquariums, podiums and more, we have seen and used them for so many good things. Take it from us, this is a versatile material! Here are a few good uses that only “scratch” the surface:

1) substitute the lens in photo frames with acrylic
Especially when shipping a photo, or using frames in displays that travel or have heavy traffic, standard glass can be heavy and dangerous. Acrylic sheets come in a variety of thicknesses and can be quickly cut to replace glass in any frame. Safer, more durable, lighter, and easier to clean!

2) Furniture protection
If you have an antique table that you want to display but have children or food present, you can quickly add a protective surface to any table, shelf, or desk to protect and complete the look. If an accident does happen, you can easily clean it up or replace/repair a scratched piece.

3) New surfaces
Get creative! Take a piece of wicker furniture and place some acrylic across the top to make it a solid table! Cover an open spool, crate, frame and then add lighting inside or below! A Closer Look at Acrylic Podiums

Throughout life, most people have had to use a podium at one time or another. In schools, churches, public meetings, corporate meetings/events, courtrooms, weddings, and anything else where a speaker may need to address a group.

It could be said that podiums have become a staple to life in developed countries around the world. When one walks into a room and sees a podium, the space is instantly defined and the visitor becomes aware of the very nature of where they are.
